A Quick Note on Company History 

EarthLink and Windstream Kinetic aren’t old partners splitting up — their ownership history is more of a brief marriage. Windstream acquired EarthLink outright in a 2017 merger valued at roughly $1.1 billion, folding it in as a wholly owned subsidiary. That arrangement didn’t last: in 2019, Windstream sold the EarthLink consumer internet business to Trive Capital, a Dallas-based private equity firm, for $330 million. EarthLink has operated independently of Windstream ever since. 

Windstream itself has changed hands too. In August 2025, Windstream completed a merger with Uniti Group, and both companies are now wholly owned subsidiaries of Uniti (Nasdaq: UNIT). Windstream’s residential fiber and DSL service continues to operate under the Kinetic brand you see today, but “Windstream” as a standalone company no longer exists in the way it did when it owned EarthLink. 

The upshot: these are two unrelated companies today, and the “history” between them is just Windstream’s brief, since-undone ownership of EarthLink nearly a decade ago. 

Plans and Pricing 

EarthLink Plans 

EarthLink’s fiber internet plans range from 100 Mbps entry tiers up to multi-gig plans between 1 and 5 Gigs, with symmetrical upload and download speeds. Current pricing starts as low as $24.95 per month. Every fiber plan includes unlimited data; no caps, no overage fees, and no throttling. 

Because EarthLink partners with multiple nationwide providers and networks, the exact speeds and prices available to you depend on your address. If fiber hasn’t reached your neighborhood yet, EarthLink can typically still connect you through Wireless 5G Home Internet, fixed wireless, or satellite internet plans, an option Kinetic simply doesn’t offer outside its own service area. 

Windstream Kinetic Plans 

Kinetic’s fiber plans start at $19.99 per month with AutoPay in select markets, with common tiers including 300 Mbps at around $39.99 per month and 1 Gig at around $49.99 per month with AutoPay. Kinetic’s top residential speed is 2 Gig. Plans are month-to-month with no annual contracts, no data caps, and free professional installation. 

Kinetic’s entry pricing is aggressive, but pay attention to the details: advertised rates generally include a $5 per month AutoPay discount, and equipment like the Kinetic Wi-Fi Gateway runs $10.99 per month at the standard rate if it isn’t bundled into your plan. 

A note on comparing the two: EarthLink’s advertised low price and Kinetic’s advertised low price are both promotional/discount-dependent rather than flat everyday rates; EarthLink’s $24.95 is a 3-month intro offer, and Kinetic’s $19.99 assumes AutoPay enrollment. Neither provider locks most customers into long-term deals, but the details differ. Kinetic advertises no annual contracts across its residential plans. Service is month-to-month, and you can cancel without an early termination fee. 

EarthLink’s terms vary by service type. Wireless home internet plans are month-to-month with no annual contracts and no early termination fees. Fiber plans may carry a subscription period depending on your plan and location, and an early termination fee can apply if you cancel mid-term. 

Data Caps 

This one’s a tie, and a win for you either way. EarthLink fiber plans have no data caps, no overage fees, and no throttling; you can stream, game, and back up to the cloud as much as you want. EarthLink’s Wireless 5G Home Internet plans are sized by data usage, with an unlimited tier available if your household burns through bandwidth. 

Kinetic also advertises unlimited data with no caps across its plans. Whichever provider you choose, you won’t be watching a usage meter. 

Equipment Costs 

Kinetic’s Wi-Fi Gateway starts at $10.99 per month, though some promotional plans bundle it in. Faster Kinetic fiber tiers include Wi-Fi 7-capable equipment. 

EarthLink leases its router at $14.95 per month. EarthLink’s routers include mesh support and app-based management, and fiber customers can pair their own router with the installed ONT if they’d rather buy than rent. 

With either provider, return leased equipment promptly when you cancel. EarthLink applies a non-returned equipment fee if hardware isn’t back within 15 days of cancellation, and Kinetic has similar return requirements.

Kinetic includes free professional installation with its fiber plans, along with Whole Home Wi-Fi setup — a package it values at up to $160. That’s a genuine perk if you’re in its footprint. 

EarthLink fiber requires professional installation since a technician needs to run the connection into your home. EarthLink’s Wireless 5G Home Internet skips installation entirely: the router ships to your door with the SIM pre-installed, and setup is a plug-in, self-install process that takes minutes — no appointment, no technician, no install fee. 

A few other line items worth knowing on both sides: watch for standard housekeeping fees like late payment or reactivation charges, and remember that Kinetic’s advertised prices assume the $5 per month AutoPay discount.
