Bullying in the U.S.: By the Numbers

Marie Flanagan By Marie Flanagan October 14, 2021

Did you know that October is National Bullying Prevention Month? Like so many things, bullying has moved online, too, in recent years. Here’s what’s happening.

An infographic covering bullying in the U.S.: 20% of students ages 12-18 have experienced bullying; 31% of sixth graders experience bullying, the most among students; 41% of students who reported being bullied think it will happen again; in the first half of 2020, Bark detected more than 165,000 instances of severe cyberbulling; 59% report being bullied online and name-calling is the most common type of harassment; 1 in 5 kids report having skipped school because of cyberbullying; 95% of teenagers are connected to the internet, and 85% use social media; 90% of teens believe online harassment is a problem that effects people their age and 63% think it's a major problem.

If you’re worried about cyberbulling, use parental control software like EarthLink Guardian to be alerted to any issues. If you or someone you know is being bullied, talk to a trusted adult, like a teacher or school counselor, or call 1-800-273-8255.
