DSL AVAILABILITY & INSTALLATION

Where is EarthLink DSL Internet service available?
EarthLink provides DSL Internet service in most areas of the country. We offer high-speed DSL access from more locations than most other Information Service Providers ("ISPs"). Simply enter your address and phone number on the main DSL or Internet Access page of this site, and we will confirm DSL availability and pricing in your area. Even if high speed DSL service is not available, you may still qualify for the EarthLink High Speed Cable Internet Service.

What DSL speeds are available in my area?
We offer broadband DSL plans with a wide range of speeds, from 768Kbps to 6Mbps—that is up to 100x faster than Dial-Up*. But not all DSL speeds are available in all areas. Enter your information on our main DSL Internet page to learn your speed options.

Do I need any special equipment?
Yes, a DSL modem and filters are required however they are included in the DSL self-installation kit which we will ship to you.

If I already have a DSL modem, can I use it?
In most cases, yes. If not, we will ship the equipment to you. The equipment is free and you just have to pay the shipping fee.

Can I install your High Speed DSL myself?
Yes, it is simple. Order EarthLink DSL Internet today, and we will send you a FREE self-installation kit that includes all the hardware (high-speed DSL modem and filters) and software you need. The software includes an easy Setup Wizard to guide you step-by-step through the installation process. Expect your kit within 7 to 10 days after the date of your order.

When should I install my DSL?
Once you are sure that your DSL line is active, you can begin setup using the Setup Wizard on the CD in your self-install kit. To check the status of your DSL line, call us at 1-888-847-4708 and say What is the status of my DSL order when prompted by the automated phone system.

Do you have technical support if I need help getting started?

If I'm upgrading from EarthLink Dial-Up, can I keep my email address and software?
Yes. It could not be easier for current EarthLink Dial-Up members like you to upgrade to High Speed DSL Internet. You do not have to change email addresses, your myEarthLink start page stays the same, and you can keep using all the same EarthLink software.

If I'm switching from another ISP, will I lose my email contact information?
No. EarthLink Web Mail makes it easy to import contacts from other programs.

How much faster is EarthLink High Speed DSL than Dial-Up?

Yes, that is one of the big benefits you get with a high-speed DSL connection

Can I set up a home network?
The hardware the EarthLink provides with the DSL service only supports one computer, but you can add a router to create a home network. EarthLink has another service you can subscribe to, EarthLink Home Networking, which lets you share one high-speed connection on all your home computers, as well as share files, printers, and peripherals. And with the free wireless equipment that comes with EarthLink Home Networking, you can enjoy high-speed access as you move around your home with a laptop, even connecting from the front porch or backyard. Plus, our support experts can help you get your network set up properly and provide assistance whenever you need it.

EARTHLINK DSL & YOUR HOME PHONE

Do I need to have home phone service to get EarthLink DSL?
In most locations, DSL service requires that you have an active home phone line. In locations where Verizon provides local phone service, we are able to offer what we call Freestanding DSL. This money-saving option gives you broadband Internet access without an active phone line. Note: All EarthLink High Speed services come with FREE Dial-Up service (typically to use away from home). You would need a phone line to connect using this free dial-up service.

Can I talk on the phone and use DSL service at the same time?
Yes, that is no problem. Surf and talk all you like. There is no need to add an additional phone line for EarthLink DSL high-speed Internet service. And, unlike with Dial-Up, you will not experience any busy signals on your phone line when you are online with your DSL connection.

Is my monthly phone service included in the EarthLink DSL Internet charges?
No. Your DSL connection will use your existing phone line, but phone service will still be provided by your phone company. Your regular monthly telephone service charges are not included in EarthLink DSL service. Please read the EarthLink Internet Service Agreement located at www.earthlink.net/about/policies/isa.faces for complete details.

What should I do if I want to change local or long-distance phone companies?
Please give EarthLink a call at 1-866-226-0572 in order to avoid any interruption to your service. Switching your local or long-distance service could permanently disconnect your EarthLink DSL, depending on who EarthLink's DSL vendor partner is in your area.

If you will be changing your phone number when you move, please go to support.earthlink.net and search for High Speed relocation support information.

What should I do if I want to change the phone number my DSL is installed on?
If you want to change your DSL phone number, please contact us first. We will need to place a new order for you in order to provide DSL service on your new phone number.

REQUIREMENTS

What are the minimum computer requirements for High Speed DSL?
The minimum hardware requirement is that your primary computer must have a Network Interface Card (NIC) also known as an Ethernet card, which is standard on most computers. If you chose to use any of the EarthLink software products with your DSL service, please refer to the minimum system requirements for each software product.

What free security do I get with my EarthLink subscription?

Where is this high-speed Internet and phone bundle available?
EarthLink DSL & Home Phone Service is available in the following greater metropolitan areas: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. However, not all homes in these cities will be serviceable. Phone service requires that you transfer an active phone number to EarthLink. To see if you are serviceable, complete our availability check.

How fast is the DSL Internet access in this bundle?
The broadband Internet access in our DSL and phone bundle is available in two speed levels. Depending on your location, you can choose from plans with up to 1.5Mbps speeds or ultra-fast broadband speeds up to 8Mbps. That's 5x faster than service from most regular DSL providers.

Can I get the home phone service without EarthLink DSL?
No. We are only able to provide this innovative phone service as part of a bundle with our high-speed DSL Internet access (with 1.5Mbps and 8.0Mbps speed options).

Can I use my all existing telephones?
Yes. This next-generation phone service lets you keep all your regular home phones plugged into any phone jack in your home.

Do I need any new equipment?
No. Unlike other VoIP phone services, you don’t need a phone adapter or any new phone equipment.

Can I keep my current home phone number?
Yes, it's easy to transfer your existing telephone number to your new home phone service from EarthLink.

Do I need to sign a contract or make a commitment?
Yes. A 1-year commitment is required for EarthLink DSL & Home Phone Service.

How is the quality of the calls?
Very good. You can expect sound quality comparable to your regular home phone service.

Will I still be able to get 911 service with EarthLink's home phone service?
Yes. Your security is extremely important to us at EarthLink. When you place your order, we will check your home address for Enhanced 911 serviceability. Enhanced 911 service allows your local emergency response teams to locate you when you make a 911 call.

Will I still have service during power outages?
Yes. EarthLink Home Phone Service is not affected by power outages. Unlike traditional Voice over IP phone services, EarthLink's Home Phone Service uses the wiring already installed in your home, and the signal is translated to digital outside your house. This keeps power outages from interrupting your service.

Will TiVO or other DVRs be compatible with DSL & Home Phone Service?
Yes. They will work fine as long as they are connected to the phone jack via a DSL filter, which we will provide you in your welcome kit.

Will DSL & Home Phone Service work with my home security system?
Probably. Our service will work with a majority of home security systems. However, you are responsible for contacting your provider to test the service and ensure that it works properly.
